We asked our current Vendor to give a brief insight into the home and what it was that first attracted them to the house all those years ago.
"I first visited this property 37 years ago and was amazed that I did not know this hidden gem existed. We had spent over a year looking for the right house and had gone past this great location many times without knowing of the private Park in the centre of Wellswood. The location is on the level; minutes from the Wellswood shops and wooded Ilsham Valley leading to Meadfoot beach; with a fifteen minute walk to the harbour or the town; it really is very convenient living!
The property is a classic townhouse built by the Harvey Brothers in 1852 for the Admiralty. It is full of original period character; gracious with a subtle charm.
The house bowled me over when I walked in the front door; exactly what I had been looking for. The layout is practical and connected; every room feeding off the central hall so there is no wasted space. The kitchen faces east; the dining and drawing rooms face south; both leading directly onto the terrace and garden. The upstairs sitting room faces west and is filled with light from the inner courtyard. The house is drenched with light whatever time of year and the veranda facilitates outside enjoyment even in the Winter...All these qualities together in a town house are rare and we love it!
The garden is a delight to enjoy; we had it designed by Sarah Eberle in 1988 with the remit to reflect the period elegance and provide seating areas that have sun and shade throughout the day. The result was an intrinsic part of the living space connected to the house. Everyone who spends time here loves it; it's perfect for sitting out; snoozing or dining...One of my favourite things is to sit at the bottom of the garden with a cup of tea and watch the sun rise; my own private paradise. For even more space; a gate opens up into the Park; a private space owned by the Residents.
I love this house; it reveals its charms as you experience the different Seasons throughout the year. It can be a very sociable house with the interconnecting rooms; it can be grand and imposing; casual and informal; or simply quiet and private; but always there is a happy and relaxed atmosphere within its walls. It is time for me to move on and fulfil ambitions to travel while I am fit enough to do so; I hope the next owner will love this unique home as much as I do; it is very special."
